Fabrizio Romano: Christensen and Frank Kessie (Milan star), can be considered players in Barcelona .

Despite Ronald Araujo’s renewal and the anticipated arrival of Andreas Christensen, Barcelona appear to have set their sights on signing another central defender amid concerns over Gerard Pique’s longevity.

The veteran defender has been in trouble lately and could go a long way in getting back in shape in these final years of his career.

Fearing the worst, Xavi is eyeing an additional center back this summer. His team is already vying to sign veteran Chelsea player Cesar Azpilicueta, but the Barcelona coach appears to prefer a full centre-back.

According to ARA, Barcelona’s search for a new central defender led them to Inigo Martinez.

The Real Sociedad player became the latest defender to be linked with a move to Catalonia this summer, thanks in large part to his phenomenal success at San Mamés over the years.

Martinez, 30, may not be an option for the future. But with 340 La Liga appearances along with 17 caps for the Spain national team, he brings plenty of experience to the table.

In addition to his pedigree at the highest level in football, Martinez is the men’s leader. His leadership qualities could be vital in leading a defensive line made up of relatively younger individuals such as Christensen, Araujo and Eric Garcia.

Even if the Spain international fails to fill Pique’s place, he could still be a great addition to the squad in light of the possible departures of Samuel Umtiti, Oscar Mingusa and Clement Lenglet.

It is unlikely that the deal will cost Barcelona much, it will be much lower

Although the Basques would be apprehensive about giving up their defensive assets to a direct competitor, it would be their last chance to take advantage of the player and generate transfer revenue that would go a long way in helping them rebuild.
